LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An e-bike rider died after being struck by a vehicle in Vista Saturday afternoon.  The 26-year old victim was riding near South Melrose Drive and Breeze Hill Road when he crossed Melrose against a red light and was struck by a northbound vehicle.  The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.  The rider died at the hospital. https://patch.com/california/carlsbad/e-bike-rider-killed-collision-vehicle-north-county

Later Saturday evening, a 65-year old pedestrian was killed at Escondido Boulevard and West El Norte Parkway.  He was found gravely injured in the roadway around 10:30p, the victim of a hit-and-run.  Escondido Police have not released a description of any suspected vehicle, the name of the victim or any further details. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/65-year-old-pedestrian-killed-in-escondido-hit-and-run-collision

A water main break in Valley Center created a sinkhole on Turtle Rock Road Sunday afternoon.  An estimated 150k gallons of water was lost and 10 nearby homes were affected by the break.  Repairs were made and water service restored to the affected homes around 2a yesterday. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4858381931298-water-main-break-creates-sinkhole-in-valley-center

Just about a month of construction left to go on the new Lake Elsinore City Hall.  The $31.3m project broke ground in late 2023.  It’s scheduled to open its doors October 1.  It replaces the previous city hall built in 1932 and located next door.  It’ll have meeting space for the city council.  They currently hold meetings at the Lake Elsinore Cultural Center.  The new City Hall will have three office levels and a fourth story deck overlooking the lake.  The city’s historic fire engine No. 1 dating back to 1925 will be on display.  The new City Hall is just part of Lake Elsinore’s downtown makeover, which includes a new 10k-square foot library at Main and Sumner Avenue.  It’s scheduled to be open later this year.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2026/08/31/lake-elsinore-prepares-for-major-changes-downtown-including-new-city-hall/

The California State legislature has approved a bill to make California Native American Day an official paid state holiday.  The bill was sponsored by Asm. James Ramos, a member of the Serrano/Cahuilla tribe.  Five years ago, he successfully authored AB 855, which created a paid judicial holiday.  Now, AB 1841 will align California Native American Day with other state holidays, elevating public understanding of tribal history in California.  (Asm. Seasonable weather in Pala through Friday, warming slightly for the weekend with a 20% chance of rain Saturday, Sunday and Monday because of a rare tropical storm passing near Southern California.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

 

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres shut out the Reds in Cincinnati 5-0.  Manny Machado had four hits.  Philadelphia edged Arizona 2-1.  The Angels broke a 7-game losing streak by routing the visiting Yankees 10-1.  The Dodgers had the day off.  They host St. Louis today as the other series continue.

The Padres have called up their #1 prospect, 20-year old catcher Ethan Salas from Triple-A El Paso.  That makes him currently the youngest player in the major leagues.  He batted .326 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 24 games with El Paso. https://www.10news.com/sports/padres/san-diego-padres-call-up-top-prospect-ethan-salas

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm begin their final series of the season tonight hosting Inland Empire.

In Major League Soccer – Argentine football star Lionel Messi announced his retirement yesterday.  His 21 years of national team duty included winning the World Cup in 2022 and a career total of 125 goals in 207 games for Argentina.  His 21 goals in World Cup competition are a record.  39-year old Messi will continue to play at the club level with Inter Miami of the MSL. https://apnews.com/article/messi-argentina-retires-8df27ab2059a740ea5bc97dbc6a49725

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down for the third consecutive trading session.  The Dow dropped three fourths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down two thirds of a percent.  And the Nasdaq fell 9 tenths.  Comex gold plunged $85, trading at $4,396.50 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained almost $4 to $89.75 a barrel.

Mortgage rates are up as new attacks in the Middle East push oil prices up.  The average rate for a fixed rate 30-year mortgage are at 6.87% – the highest they’ve been in 14 months and 12 basis point higher than last week.  The expectation had been for rates to fall this year.  But the Iran war has turned that upside down.  The day before the war started, the rate on a 30-year mortgage was 5.99%.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/31/mortgage-rates-surge-middle-east-attacks-oil.html

San Diego County has completed a new round of youth, alumni and community engagement to help determine the future of San Pasqual Academy (SPA), a 238-acre residential educational campus for foster youth.  Recent outreach meetings in July and August 2026 brought together current foster youth, SPA alumni, service providers and community members to share their priorities, concerns and hopes for the campus. Feedback from all groups showed strong interest in keeping SPA open with an expanded, trauma-informed model that could serve foster youth and additional vulnerable populations. A revised version of the so-called “Leno’s Law” to exempt certain classic vehicles from smog check is on the governor’s desk awaiting being signed into law.   Leno’s Law would extend full smog check exemptions to qualifying classic and collectible vehicles beginning on January 1, 2028, with collector motor vehicles manufactured before the 1981 model year and then adding one model year through 2033, when the exemption would reach vehicles manufactured before the 1986 model year.  Leno’s Law also updates the definition of a “collector motor vehicle” under Vehicle Code section 259 so the exemption applies only to true classics, not to old daily driver beaters.  Qualifying vehicles must be at least 35 model years old and must either carry collector insurance with proof submitted to the Bureau of Automotive Repair or be limited to 1,000 miles per year through a process developed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.  Collector car insurance also limits miles driven.  Previous versions of the bill were defeated in the legislature.  (media release from Sen. On this day in music history – September 1,

• In 1957, The Biggest Show of Stars concert tour kicked off at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theater featuring Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Drifters, The Everly Brothers, and Frankie Lymon.  Not all acts were able to play every city because of segregation laws at the time.
• In 1962, Tommy Roe was at #1 with “Sheila”, a re-recorded version of a song first released two years earlier when Roe was with a group call The Satins.
• In 1966, The Byrds played the first of an 11-night gig at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go in Hollywood.  The club began two years earlier with a live band led by Johnny Rivers and a female DJ in a mini-skirt spinning records between band sets suspended in a cage.  She began dancing during Rivers’ sets, the audience thought it was part of the act, and the concept of Go-Go dancers in cages was born.
• In 1967, The Beatles met at Paul McCartney’s house to decide what to do now following the previous week’s death of manager Brian Epstein.  They decided to postpone their planned pilgrimage to India to study TM and being production of the already-delayed Magical Mystery Tour movie.  Two songs, the title track and “Your Mother Should Know” had already been recorded.
• In 1976, Pink Floyd’s 9^th studio album, “Wish You Were Here” was nearing a year on the album charts, having been released in September of ’75.
• In 1977, Blondie, featuring former Playboy Bunny Debra Harry signed their first record deal with the Chrysalis label.
• In 1979, U2 released their first record.  It was an EP titled “U2-3”.  Only 1k numbered copies were pressed and it was available only in their native Ireland.
• In 1983, the other three member of The Clash fired lead guitarist Mick Jones, claiming he’d drifted apart from the original concept for the band.
• In 1984, 25 years into her musical career, Tina Turner had her first #1 hit with “What’s Love Got to Do With It”.  The song had been turned down by Cliff Richard and Donna Summer.
• In 2005, Barry Cowsill, bass guitarist for the family band The Cowsills died in Hurricane Katrina.  His body wasn’t recovered for nearly four months.
• In 2011, Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight because he was wearing his pants too low.
• In 2016, a plaque commemorating Freddie Mercury’s first home upon his arrival in England was unveiled in Feltham, West London.  His family arrived from Zanzibar in 1964 when Freddie was 17.
